Student Experiences

Alex Shashoua

The whole event and extent of the competition was a lot bigger than I was expecting.  More professional than I thought it would be.  My dad is not that handy so I had no experience with tools before.  I learned to use drill press, sanding machine, lathe.  I cut the wood base and drilled some holes.  The design process was very democratic, based more on what people liked rather than what would work best.  Looking forward to the competition.

I picked the programming team, because no one else offered, so I stepped up.  The first meeting we had as a team was when the volunteer from the CRC came to Bialik to do a workshop in C program.  I didn't really get very excited about it, but wished I had my laptop with me.  Once I got the Line Tracker sensors, life became odd, since I never programmed before.  They are annoyingly difficult.  We figured out how to use them through a video on the VEX site, since everything is on the Internet!

I went to the event last year which I thought was cool.  As soon as we started this year, I was confused about everything.  Nothing has cleared up for me.  Especially since I am trying to write the code to make the line sensor detect a turn. The computer crashed and I lost my code and am in the process of rewriting it.  I will be saving it by emailing it to myself!

Rona Katz - Team Manager

This has been the most organized and productive year to date.  We have a new member of the team, Haviv,  a build mentor who is a genius with tools, building, design and the like. Most of the students have NO experience and have been spectacular learning how to learn to use the tools in the lab.  The entire team got a programming workshop this year, which is new, and everyone got to experience that aspect.  Almost every team member had never done any programming before.    The kiosk team is composed of 4 wildly wonderful, talented young ladies who have fun every minute of their working time together.  The web site has two members whose talents complement each other perfectly.  In fact our web designer, Hilla, also helped make our tshirts.

I have been a part of robotics for 2 years now and I have to say that I've had a great time! I have learnt so much especially how to use different tools like a drill press, band saw... I am extremely excited for the robotics competition and am confident we will do great!

I learned the process of brainstorming a design.  I got to have a hands on experience using tools that I never had before.  I used the bandsaw to cut wood and the sander to soften the edges.  I also used the handheld power sander as well as drills.  It was difficult to figure out the measurements we needed for the accumulator (part of the robot that collects balls)  as whole.  Looking forward to the competition.

I learned to use power tools, it was fun.  It was smart to vote on the different parts of the design, it felt like a team effort.  The kickoff was cool because we saw the field the field for the first time.  I wanted it to have levels but it was flat.  I am very excited for the competition.

The best part of this competition has been seeing everyone working together and documenting these amazing moments.  Designing the website was very satisfying.  It took a lot of hours at home and after school to document, post and organize the websites.

I thought the kickoff was fun as it was flashy.  Working on the design was annoying as there were so many ideas and no one was agreeing.  When we finally got into the robotics lab, we really started to have fun because we were working with the tools.  The robot finally took shape and I was ecstatic.  Most things that we had planned for the design happened.  Thanks to parent volunteers for all of their help.

This is my third year in the robotics competition.  Last year I was responsible for the programming of the VEX controller.  This year, I learned to use the Line Sensor Trackers which was really cool.  I am involved in a lot of activities so I try to do as much as I can for each one.  I am really looking forward to the competition.
